A general discussion on Unschooling

Unschooling is quite a modern practice of imparting education. As per the convention, an individual can be educated only in the confines of a school or college campus. Unschooling     breaks away this notion. It can be considered as both a method and philosophy, where the leaner chooses the means, which are most suitable for them to learner, not those that are imposed by teachers or school authorities. The students, who are unschooled, tend to lean about things through the experiences of life.

The students can gain their experiences, which in turn can help them learn from different situations and activities. The experiences include playing, elementary responsibilities of the household, curiosity & personal interests, work experience & internships, books & travel, elective classes, social interaction with family, mentors or acquaintances and many more. The process of unschooling encourages the learners to explore the findings associated with the activities that have been initiated by the students themselves.

John Holt the ‘father of unschooling’ coined the term in 1970s. It is often confused with homeschooling. However, homeschooling advocates the conventional curricula and grading methods whereas unschooling does not. Homeschooling has grabbed a lot of media attention and debate whereas unschooling did not. It is that unschooling has been criticized frequently since it is assumed that unschooled students would lack social skills and motivation as compared to their schooled counterparts. Nevertheless, the advocates argue that education, which is self-directed against the backdrop of natural environment, helps a child to perform better and handle this real world.
